Milkbath photoshoot

I had a chance to do my first milkbath photoshoot this week with Rosie Petal and Samone Pierce. The shoot location was in a backyard in Folsom. While the temperatures were in the 90’s, the bath water was ice cold, so the models couldn’t stay under water too long.

Rosie shot with the Fujifilm X-T3 and the 56mm lens. Natural light with a 48 inch softbox using 2 layers of diffusion.

Camping with Alex

I had the idea of doing a camp-girl photoshoot at the Inn Town Campground in Nevada City and Alex Jade did an amazing job as the model.

We started the shoot in a RetroRV. Shooting with the Fujifilm X-T3 and natural light.

Portraits with Becca

I worked with bay area model Becca on some really special portraits over the weekend in Nevada City.

This image of Becca at the Tulip Gardens is now one of my favorite portraits that I have captured. Everything about it is special, just works and tells a story. This is the type of portraits i would love to create all day long.

After taking photos at the tulip garden, we headed down to the cemetery outside downtown Nevada City for some moody and emotional portraits.

More with Annaliese Nobile

Teen model, Annaliese asked me to do a photoshoot with her in Nevada City this week. The 3 hour shoot included a visit to the Holbrooke Hotel in Grass Valley before it was closed for renovation. We probably had the very last photoshoot in that hotel before the furniture was sold and the wallpaper removed.

We used natural light in the hotel, so that we would not bother the people running around the hallways purchasing every lamp, chair and bed in the building.

Viewbug Contest Award

Viewbug.com notified me today that I won the “Transportation Hub” photography award for my bus stop photo. The contest had over 4100 submissions of some really impressive photos from around the world. This was one of my very first night photos, shot in the early morning while driving to work one morning. The photo was taken at the Antioch BART station while it was still under construction.

At this point, I have no idea what my prize will be, but it will be in the mail soon. it does look like they did award 5 other photos in this same contest.

Best Street Photography of 2018

It’s the time of year when I post my “Best of”. This year I decided to select the images I like the most, without a limit of only 10. My best 2018 Street Photography work is at: https://flic.kr/s/aHsmoRzRPy

Finding Shadows

After watching Sean Tucker talk about Shadows, I wanted to see how I have used shadows in my street photography this year. Not just really high contract images, but actual shadows to highlight a subject. I love using very high contract and shadows whenever possible, but the small towns I shoot in, just are not heavy in shaded areas. Overall, I find it easier to crush the blacks and make an image very contrasty, and I will do a blog entry for that soon.

Below are a few of the images I found this year, that use shadow. As I reviewed my work, I can see more shadows being used later in the year, as my skills improved.
